The Pale Figures are now available on 8 Track
In order to experience The Pale Figures in pure analog, we have decided to release - 8 Tracks. The Pale Figures Master Tapes were recorded on 2" analog and mixed to 1" audio tape. At the point prior to digital transfers The Pale Figures transferred the Steve Albini -Electrical Audio Mixes and The Roland Janes -Sam Phillips Recording Service Mixes direct to 8 Track master tapes for the exclusive purpose of manufacturing 8 Tracks.
The Studios that we recorded our record "Memphis and Chicago" in are known for having some of the best vintage analog equipment in the county. It seemed a waste to just record on analog and only make the songs available in a digital format. In addition to standard Vinyl records we believe that the 8 track may have been the most accurate way for us to portray the Analog sound. Why Analog? Analog recording has a warm sound that simply can't be re-created with digital. Why do people still listen to Analog Formats? When you put in an 8 track and listen to the tape hiss past the 8 track heads and punch the advance program buttons you are stepping into the past. You find yourself slowing down and listening to the music. 8 tracks played at party or in the home while relaxing create an atmosphere that many of you have never experienced and that plenty of you have most likely repressed. When The Pale Figures or our friends throw parties it is common for us to put on old 8 track tapes and let them play through for the entire evening. The 8 track creates a mood that is unlike what most people are accustomed to...in a world that is moving so quickly, we think the 8 track helps us - unplug, slow down, relax and enjoy our lives.
Digital formats will always be available but it is necessary for us to keep the 8 track alive. The 8 track touch is unlike that of any audio experience that can be created with ipod,CD, mp3, vinyl or cassette.
In addition, to releasing the record on 8 track we are providing reconditioned - recycled vintage analog 8 track players. These players are all unique and all really fun to operate. The analog purist will prefer the stereo preamp models that can be hooked up to conventional stereos. The ipod generation savey listener will appreciate the self contained portable 8 track player with attached speaker.

The (14) songs featured on The Pale Figures Golden Hits Volume 1 were recorded and mixed by Steve Albini and Roland Janes. Volume 1 contains 45 minutes of music as follows: Program 1: Portrait - Light at The end of the Tunnel, Newton Saw, You are a Star Program 2: Strange Cancer - I don't have you - Mint Jody Program 3: Beautiful World - The Sun Will Come Again - Perfect Word, Program 4: Rabbit on The Run - You Know We Know - Glass Cafe - Memphis Air.
The (10) songs featured on The Pale Figure Golden Hits Volume 2 were recorded and mixed by Steve Albini and Roland Janes. Volume 2 contains 32 minutes of music as follows: Program 1: Portrait - Light at the end of The Tunnel - Newton Saw Program 2: You are a Star - I don' Have You (Roland Janes Memphis Mix) Program 3: Beatuiful World - Strange Cancer Program 4: You know we know - Rabbit on The Run - Glass Cafe

8 Track Player - Stand Alone - Self Contained - 2XL Michael J. Freeman had a hard time convincing companies of the benefits that his toy would provide. Many companies turned down the idea, saying it was just too expensive and not practical to invest so much into an educational toy when kids are typically relucant to buy educational items. Finally, Mego Corporation decided that it fit in well with their company. They were makers of action figures based on popular TV shows, many of which were sci firelated. Freeman was involved with all phases of the toy's development, including how the internal mechanism worked. The Mego version of 2-XL was produced for four years, 1978-1981. In the end, 2-XL became one of the most innovative and successful toys to date.
All told there were about 50 program tapes made for the Mego 2-XL. It was highly popular in its first years, but it faded into obscurity after the turn of the decade. The toy will often show up on auction sites and in used toy stores. They aren't rare by any means, but aren't in mass quantities either. Some of the tapes can be harder to find; the last year tapes are rarer due to the decreased popularity of the toy in its last year on the market. |
