Free Spirit formed during a time in the late 1980's when punk rock was touring
it's finest bands through small towns througout the US. Bands like JFA,
The Dead Kennedy's, Agent Orange, Black Flag, The Dickies, Fugazi and
The Circle Jerks.
. . .We were all playing in different bands - the drummer and
bass player were playing in a Punk band called Mutual Hate and I was
playing in a New Wave / College Radio band Called The Storm. One day and
I am still not sure how it happened, I joined up with my old friends and
we basically fused the two styles. Vocally, I kept my new wave college radio melodies and musically we kept the edge of the punk but lighted it up a bit.
I have fond memories of traveling to play in St Louis and opening for bands like
the Dickies at Kutskas Hall, playing at the local all girls school and at the Riverside Ball Room. I am certain that this is what started me on the
path of making records and I will always have great memories of playing
with Bill and Scott...and of course Joe our sound guy.
